Hashima Island, also known as Gunkanjima or Battleship Island, is located off the coast of Nagasaki, Japan. Its unique, densely packed concrete structures were built to house miners and their families during its active coal mining period. The island was largely abandoned after the mine closed in 1974. Today, Hashima Island is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visiting requires a guided tour boat trip. The island's eerie, derelict buildings are popular subjects for photography. Many of the buildings are in a state of advanced disrepair. Careful consideration should be given to the island's history and the impact of tourism before visiting.
